Description

Effectively teaching individuals with social learning challenges requires us all to avoid assumptions about what they interpret and how they use language to successfully communicate their thoughts and needs. In this second of four modules, the first two letters of the ILAUGH acronym are explored: the “I,” which represents initiation of communication; and the “L,” which stands for how we listen with our eyes, ears, and brain to interpret socially based information. Client videos will further demonstrate these concepts and reading comprehension of literature will be explored as a social interpretive process. Connecting to the educational standards, strategies will be provided to encourage developing routines to foster initiation: a core Social Thinking *treatment concept, thinking with one’s eyes, is described to help students control “blurting,” or calling out in class; and coping with “boring moments” will be explored. Specific treatment ideas will be shared to promote personal problem solving as it is tied to reading comprehension of literature.

*Treatment refers to using conceptual and strategy-based frameworks to help individuals improve their social thinking, skills, and competencies.

4 Module Series

The ILAUGH Model: Exploring Social Thinking & the Social-Academic Connection

preload

About This Series

Most people regularly engage in a range of social interactions, yet few know that social engagement is only part of our larger repertoire of social responses. In this series, the learner will explore how each aspect of our social thinking facilitates our ability to not only socially interact but also to engage in academic processes such as written expression, reading comprehension, narrative language, group work, classroom participation, etc. Social cognition is at the heart of our social being and it is from this point of view that the company Social Thinking has developed social-emotional learning concepts, frameworks, and strategies. The ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition is an evidence-based conceptual framework to guide professionals and parents to better understand and teach social competencies by exploring social thinking, social problem solving, and the social learning experience, including the social-academic connection. ILAUGH is an acronym to represent ideas published in research, informal assessment, and *treatment related to: Initiating communication, Listening with the eyes and brain, Abstracting and inferencing, Understanding perspective, Getting the big picture (gestalt), and Humor and human relationship. This four-module series will provide the learner with specific concepts and strategies that can be utilized in classrooms and homes. This information was developed for students with social learning challenges, such as those with ASD, ADHD, speech and language impairments, etc. However, mainstream teachers and school administrators have also found this information is germane to better understanding all students’ social-emotional learning processes.

*Treatment refers to using conceptual and strategy-based frameworks to help individuals improve their social thinking, skills, and competencies.

  1. I do not pay ASHA for CE Registry
    • This option is for SLPs who do not pay to use the ASHA CE Registry. This could be because you are not affiliated with ASHA, do not maintain your CCCs, or choose to maintain your own CE hours, which ASHA refers to as Certification Maintenance Hours, or CMHs. If the latter applies to you, save your Certificate of Completion as it qualifies as your ASHA Verification of Attendance form. If you select this option, your CE information will NOT be sent to the ASHA CE Registry. If you are not affiliated with ASHA, we recommend you contact your licensing and/or certification organization to confirm whether you can earn credit for watching our eLearning content. For some professionals, your personalized Certificate of Completion may meet the criteria necessary to earn CE credit!

  2. I pay ASHA for CE Registry
    • This option is for SLPs who pay annually to use the ASHA CE Registry to maintain their CE hours (info about the ASHA CE Registry below). Once you’ve completed a module, finished the evaluation, and passed the test, we will submit your CE information to ASHA at the end of that month at no additional cost. ASHA will process the information and award credit within the ASHA CE Registry (assuming you meet all of their requirements). It may take a few months for your ASHA CEUs to be reflected on your transcript. For inquiries about credit awarded or not awarded within the CE Registry, ask ASHA directly.
